Glossary
As with any industry, the web has a vocabulary of it's own. In order to make the transition easier for you, we have tried to explain some of them below:
Bandwidth - the capacity of the connection between your server and the internet. Often bandwidth is also used to describe the actual traffic in this connection.
Bot / Robot / Spider - a program that runs through your site and all pages it links to. This is how search engines get their content.
Browser - Program used for viewing pages on the internet. Examples of browsers are Microsoft Internet Explorer, Netscape Navigator, and Opera.
Children - the reason you can't always get to your own computer to check your e-mail.
Cookie - a small file saved to your local computer to keep track of where you are in a given transaction.
Download - to transfer to your computer a copy of a file that resides on another computer.
FAQ - a file that contains Frequently Asked Questions and answers
Firewall - security measures designed to protect a networked system from unauthorized or unwelcome access.
Flash - A special plugin used to view rich Internet content, graphics and applications. Over 95% web users have the flash plugin installed on their browser. Another form of this plug-in is also known as Shockwave.
Hit - every request made to your server for data. Every graphic on a web page is a hit as well as the page itself.
Host - the owner of a web server. Web pages are simple documents, and they need a place to live for others to find them. (see also "web server").
HTML - Hyper Text Markup Language - the language used to create most web pages, with commands that create effects like bold, underline, paragraph spacing, etc.
Hyperlink - a link in a given document to information within another document. These links are usually represented by highlighted words or images. The user also has the option to underline these hyperlinks.
ISP - Internet Service Provider - this company provides a medium for you to connect to the internet, be it by phone, cable, satellite, or other.
Javascript - is a platform-independent, event-driven, interpreted programming language developed by Netscape Communications Corp. and Sun Microsystems. JavaScript is useful for adding interactivity to the World Wide Web and enhance the user experience through event handling and client-side execution, while extending a web developer's control over the client's browser.
Page View - when a visitor views a single page on your site. A single page can be made up of many hits (see "hits").
(Web) Server - a computer that serves information and software to the Internet community.
Spam or Spamming - The transmission of bulk, unsolicited mail is referred to as "spamming". This is actually illegal on the internet and if caught or reported, and organization can be shut down and taken off the internet. Typically, even though spammers know that they will be shut down for this activity, they also know that they still will have hit some 200,000 emails before that happens.
TLA - ironically enough, this stands for a Two or Three Letter Acronym. When clients communicate with the qualified individuals at BAP Web Design, the internal lingo is left at the door and clients will always understand what is being said.
URL - Universal Resource Locator - the address used to specify a site on the web - eg 'www.somewhere.com' or 'www.somedomain.com/directory'
Visitor - someone viewing your web site. A visitor can look at many pages (see 'page views').
Web Page - an HTML document that is accessible on the Web.
